I began my teaching career in 1987, teaching Theatre Studies and English to A level at Invicta Grammar school; I also taught at Highsted Grammar school, and briefly at Valley Park. For the last ten years I have been working as a freelance teacher for two private primary schools, which has been both challenging and rewarding.
My work as a tutor has always been something that I enjoy and get satisfaction from. Seeing a child suddenly understand a topic that they have been struggling with in school, and watching their self- esteem improve as a consequence, is so rewarding. I have always emphasised the importance of reading to my students, and I believe that it is the key to improving comprehension and writing skills. In these days of the very stringent GCSE, and more rigorous expectations of Key Stage 2 English, reading is something that every student should be doing every day, for pleasure.
The environment of Success Education and Training is a clean, professional space, with no distractions for children. Working in a home provides a myriad of distractions and can draw a child’s focus away from their studies. I am delighted to be working for a company that encourages dialogue between parent and tutor, and that expects active support at home to consolidate work done in class.
