Learn English EAL/ESL

The EAL programme will vary considerably depending on the level of existing English and the reasons for taking up classes. At Success Tuition we focus on the key skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, as well as developing an understanding of British culture, traditions and values to support integration.

The overall aim is to develop confidence in the use of English in its various forms. Typical priorities and activities could include:

  • Listening: following and responding to instructions; comprehension; sequencing; learning sounds and pronunciation etc
  • Speaking: survival phrases (basic needs); nouns for naming objects; common verbs for activities and tenses; developing conversational skills including key transactions, such as travel, shopping etc.
  • Reading: survival reading (notices and signs); describing images; reading range of texts; phonemes (letter sounds); progressively challenging comprehension etc
  • Writing: letter formation; key words and spellings; sentence construction; grammar – verbs and tenses, word order, agreement etc

Student Resources

Student Resources

Home > Student Support > Student Resources

We are constantly looking for new ways to support all our students beyond the classroom, and to provide information to help parents understand curriculum demands, so they can support their child. We regularly update this page with links to further resources or helpful sites for students.

PRIMARY SUPPORT

We encourage parents to enrol their children from Year 3. This allows us to support their understanding in Numeracy and Literacy as they progress through KS2 and on to secondary school. Children in Year 3 and 4 who attend the bespoke learning centre at Success Tuition also have access to our 11+ Portal. This provides opportunities for children planning to sit the Kent or Medway Test to practise questions, and also allows parents to assess the suitability of their child to do this.

11+ SUPPORT

Please see our Portal for tests to support your child’s development in Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning, English and Mathematics.

KS3 SUPPORT

At KS3, we support students to achieve successful progression to GCSE. For some children, this means work which stretches and challenges them and prepares them for the syllabus and assessment processes at GCSE. For others, we can provide catch-up support, to ensure they are well-prepared to commence these qualifications, without being at a disadvantage to their peers. We will set additional work for students to complete at home, in order to consolidate their learning and allow us to check their progress.

GCSE

At GCSE it is important that students know about the specific examination boards for each of their subjects. Some of the most popular examination boards are AQA, OCR and Edexcel.

Although students will be marked on the same skills (assessment objectives), the examination papers will be laid out differently and the mark schemes will vary.   You will find details of the examination boards for each subject your child is doing at GCSE on their school’s website.  Use the links to find out about:

  • Examination papers your child will sit;
  • How they will be marked.

In addition to these sites, there are many others which offer excellent support to GCSE students.  One of the most well-known is GCSE Bitesize, which covers all GCSE subjects, and also all the individual texts which your child might study for English Literature.

7.5 billion of us. Something as simple as being able to communicate can break down barriers. To be able to connect to someone in their language is an amazing human experience and fluency in more than one language also opens up many opportunities. Knowing more than one language creates a significant advantage which sets you apart from monolingual peers. To have learnt a second language shows strong cognitive skills, mental flexibiltiy, problem-solving and social interaction skills. Learning a second language also opens additional doors for opportunities to study or work abroad or find employment with businesses with an international clientele.

When travelling abroad, the ability to speak the local language transforms the cultural experience. Those who only speak their own language tend to visit the same places they’ve been to before and rely on others to guide them, whereas those who can speak the local language are more easily able to navigate outside the ‘tourist bubble.’ They’ll be able to interact with the place and its people in ways that  are inaccessible for those without the language.

For all languages below, we are also able to offer other services on request, including support with translation or completion of forms.

Learn French

French is the official language in 29 countries and spoken by 12% of the EU population. It is the second most widely taught language after English. At Success Tuition, we prepare students for GCSE French and can also offer support for KS3 students who want to take up the subject at GCSE or 11+ students who want a head start in languages for secondary school. A range of options are available, from beginners to those wishing to improve GCSE performance. All teaching will be based on progression to GCSE, focusing on the key skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

Learn English EAL

Success Tuition has a strong track record in supporting children and families for whom English is not their first language, providing translation services, support with form filling and accompanying clients to appointments with a range of organisations. Now, we are offering English as an Additional Language lessons to support adults (and identified students) with speaking, writing and reading English. The lessons will be adapted to suit individual needs, which include: absolute beginners, such as people new to the country; those wanting to build their confidence in spoken or written English; people preparing for tests or exams in English.  We are happy to discuss individual needs and to tailor tuition accordingly.

Learn Spanish

More people in the world speak Spanish than English. It is the second most widely spoken language in the world, with nearly 6% of the total population speaking Spanish. At Success Tuition, we prepare students for GCSE Spanish and can also offer support for KS3 students who want to take up the subject at GCSE or 11+ students who want a head start in languages for secondary school. A range of options are available, from beginners to those wishing to improve GCSE performance. All teaching will be based on progression to GCSE, focusing on the key skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

Weekly Tuition

Weekly Tuition

Home > Weekly tuition

Weekly tuition takes place throughout the year, in term time and throughout school holidays. In term time, we run weekly tuition programmes for all subjects and key stages.  These take place between 4.30 – 6.30 pm on weekdays, and from 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday. This means we have a range of times to suit everyone.  Most of our students attend for a two-hour block, with one hour for English and the other for Mathematics.

Our students benefit from a regular, weekly slot, as all tuition groups follow a clear programme, which targets the demands, skills and assessment objectives for each element, whether that is the 11 + or a GCSE syllabus.  This also provides continuity in terms of the same teacher for them, and peers with whom they are comfortable.

Fees for Classes

The fees for the weekly classes vary from £13.00-£16.00 per hour if you book a regular two-hour block.    This includes all resources and equipment. We also have special offers which make it possible for you to save, when you sign up to an extended block booking.  Our initial assessment of your child and the first tuition session are free.

11 Plus Tuition

Our 11+ tuition support is provided in two-hour blocks, enabling students to have weekly support for Verbal Reasoning and English, alongside another session for Non-Verbal Reasoning and Mathematics. Our approach is to teach the test requirements and skills needed for the different types of questions children will encounter.  We also make sure that they know what to expect for the specific tests that they are sitting, as these can vary across Kent and Medway. We then introduce practice questions for individual skills, to build children’s confidence.  The tuition sessions also cover the English and Mathematics tests which are part of the 11+.  To support you and the children outside of tuition hours, we provide a dedicated 11+ portal at no additional cost.

GCSE Tuition

We offer weekly tuition to support students with English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Science.  Our initial and ongoing assessments identify individual needs and the exam boards which they follow for different subjects e.g. AQA, OCR, Edexcel. This allows us to tailor support and resources to help students understand the exam board demands, the mode of assessment and objectives and the weighting of different components.  Most of our students are looking to achieve targets between Grades 4 -9, and we differentiate our tuition programme to ensure all students are challenged and that they understand the specification that they are following.

As well as targeted GCSE support, we offer booster preparation sessions for Year 7-9 students, to prepare them for GCSE success.
